Illipah Reservoir, Nevada 10.18.2015

After a hard rain last night we headed towards Nevada by taking Utah 24 to I70 and then US 50. It was another day of beautiful scenery, lots of wind, rain, and dramatic clouds.  US 50 makes a left turn in Salina, Utah that we missed because several blocks of downtown were closed due to some type of emergency. We drove up US 89 to Gunnison, Utah before we realized we were on the wrong road and turned around. Downtown Salina was still closed but we were able to find side streets back to US 50. Capitol Reef Wow! 10.17.2015

We arrived at Capitol Reef National Park and secured one of the last campsites in Fruita, a former fruit producing homestead. The campground has spacious level paved sites but felt crowded and too civilized after spending last night alone. Continue reading Capitol Reef Wow! 10.17.2015

Hite to Capitol Reef 10.17.2015

Last night it was windy with scattered rain showers. When we awoke this morning it started to rain in earnest and fearing the dirt track we came in on would quickly turn to slick clay we slowly drove out to the  highway entrance with the camper top up. There we enjoyed our usual breakfast of eggs, greens, sausage, and fresh sauerkraut. Continue reading Hite to Capitol Reef 10.17.2015

Camping in Former Lake Powell 10.16.2015

We descended to Cortez from the Mesa Verde Campground and stopped for groceries at the City Market. We were delighted by the friendly staff, grass fed meat and good selection of organic vegetables. Continue reading Camping in Former Lake Powell 10.16.2015

Four Corners & Mesa Verde 10.15.2015

Chaco was so peaceful, uncrowded and interesting that we didn’t want to leave but we needed to move on. After a Ranger led tour of Pueblo Bonito, we returned to US 550 and headed north to US 64 where we turned northwest through Farmington, Shiprock, and on to Teec Nos Pos. Our next stop was the Four Corners Monument off of US 160 where we joined the crowd taking silly pictures of ourselves in four states at once. Continue reading Four Corners & Mesa Verde 10.15.2015

More Chaco Canyon 10.14.2015

This morning we joined a Ranger led tour of the Hungo Pavi ruin where we learned that Chaco Culture buildings are always located on a high  point with a view of a sacred landmark, such as Fajada Butte and the walls are built with a stone veneer over a rubble core. The style of the stone veneer indicates when the pueblo was built. The pueblos were three to four stories high with a large kiva in the front. We saw many unnatural looking humps near the cliff bases that are actually ruins. Continue reading More Chaco Canyon 10.14.2015

Albuquerque, Coronado, Santa Fe National Forest 10.12.2015

We spent the morning on I40 heading to Albuquerque where we stopped just long enough to buy organic groceries at a Sprouts Farmers Market.

The Coronado Historic Site at Bernalillo, on US 550 protects the ruins of the Kuaua pueblo. Today we enjoyed the small museum and ate lunch under a ramada overlooking the Rio Grande where tiny lizards scampered around. Continue reading Albuquerque, Coronado, Santa Fe National Forest 10.12.2015

We Won the MAOF Film Festival!

We had a wonderful time at the Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival reconnecting with friends and making new ones on the beautiful Henwood family farm in central Pennsylvania. Most exciting of all was winning the Saturday night film festival. Thanks to the generosity of Main-Line Overland, La Tortuga, the Four Wheel Campers flatbed Hawk on a RAM 2500 Cummins diesel, the back of our camper now sports a new set of maxtrax .

Coyote Serenade, Hometown Visit, and New Mexico 10.11.2015

Last night and again this morning we were serenaded by singing coyotes. I don’t know why, but that always makes me smile. Copper Breaks Texas State Park is also an international dark sky park and the stars were fantastic. Continue reading Coyote Serenade, Hometown Visit, and New Mexico 10.11.2015

Coin-op Showers, Fresh Veggies and Texas 10.10.2015

Arrowhead State Park, Oklahoma has coin operated showers. We used all our quarters but the showers ran out too quickly. Still covered with soap and conditioner, a cold water rinse in the sink took care of the problem.

We found a farmer’s market in McAlester, Oklahoma that was three friendly older farmers selling vegetables. Since we eat tons of vegetables we bought several kinds from each of them. Continue reading Coin-op Showers, Fresh Veggies and Texas 10.10.2015

Hot Water and a Night in Oklahoma 10.09.2015

I don’t usually react to mosquito bites, but the many bites I got last night in the few minutes I was outside made an itchy mess of my ankles. Those Arkansas mosquitoes are virulent!

After breakfast we headed back to I40 and continued west with the trucks. There were many Dollar General trucks on the highway sadly reminding us that many rural residents have no other place to shop.

Remembering that Hot Springs National Park has delicious free spring water we approached Hot Springs up Gulpha Gorge on US 708. The National Park campground in the Gorge has small tightly spaced sites along the creek. It’s the closest campground to Hot Springs and does not take reservations. Continue reading Hot Water and a Night in Oklahoma 10.09.2015

We Attempt to Stealth Camp in Arkansas 10.08.2015

Yesterday we had difficulty finding the Piney Grove campground coming from the north. There were no signs and we took some wrong turns before finally arriving. This morning it became obvious that we left the Trace too soon because the main entrance is from the south. Continue reading We Attempt to Stealth Camp in Arkansas 10.08.2015
