After a relatively quiet night we went to the Meriwether Lewis National Monument. It is located at Grinder’s Stand where Lewis apparently shot himself on his way to Washington DC. Behind the Visitor Center we walked a section of the original trail.
We drove one of the Tennessee side loops in the vain hope of finding a farm stand and ended up shopping at a regular supermarket before returning to the trace.
The Trace crosses the corner of Alabama and continues in Mississippi to Natchez on the Gulf of Mexico. Our lunch stop was in Alabama with a view of the Tennessee River.
At the large Piney Grove US Army Corps of Engineers campground we found a nice level water view site. A small unfriendly dog from the neighboring campsite was running loose and harassed us several times. While we were eating dinner at the picnic table we heard noises behind us and thought the dog was making a sneak attack. Instead a large armadillo snuffled through our campsite and on into the woods. Crossed that one off of my childhood bucket list!
